Animal Description:  

The Harlequin Rasbora is an exotic and beautiful fish. It is small, colorful, peaceful, and easily maintained; and it is very popular among aquarists. It makes a good fish for beginning aquarists, due to its small size and ease of care, and is desired by experienced aquarists because of its wonderful coloring.

The Harlequin Rasbora is a peaceful fish. It will go well into just about any aquarium. However, due to their constant activity, they might irritate less active fish, such as the Angel Fish. Harlequin Rasboras should be kept in small groups, as they will school. They should not be kept with very large fish, as they might become dinner. Harlequin Rasboras can be kept in small tanks, but obviously, the larger the better. Moderate rock and dense plant decoration is needed. Live plants are highly recommended, especially for breeding. The average lifespan of the Harlequin Rasbora is between 10 and 15 years.

Harlequin Rasboras are pleasing to look at. They are a colorful fish, and are a great choice for adding lots of colors to an aquarium with the size. Harlequin Rasboras have a large triangular spot on their body. Their body color consists of red, purple and blue colors. At maturity, the Harlequin Rasbora will reach a size of one to two inches.

The Harlequin Rasbora, or Rasbora heteromorpha, is found in Malaysia, Java, Thailand and Sumatra.

Specific Care Information: Relative Care Ease: Relatively Easy

The Harlequin Rasbora is easy to care for, and makes a great fish for beginners. They should be kept in water with a temperature range from 72 to 81 degrees Fahrenheit. The pH level of their water should be between 6.6 and 7.5, and should be soft. Harlequin Rasboras should be fed tubifex worms, small mosquito larvae, cyclops, and daphnia, as well as freeze dried and flake foods. The Harlequin Rasboras is susceptible to Ick. However, care should be taken when treating these fish, as they are very sensitive to chemicals.

Breeding and Propagation: Relative Breeding Ease: Relatively Easy

The Harlequin Rasbora is fairly easy to breed. Red-leafed plants should be in their aquarium. This is where the eggs will be deposited. At spawning, roughly 70 to 200 eggs will be produced. The male will have a darker, more conspicuous triangle than the female, which will distinguish the sexes.
