Animal Description:

The Green Severum is usually quite peaceful. Many owners report that they can hand feed these fish, after they grow accustomed to them over time. Some keepers even report petting their Severums! Although they will come to the top of the tank for feeding most Green Severums seem to prefer to remain in the bottom level of their tanks.

Most Green Severums reach mature lengths of about eight inches (20 centimeters). Although juveniles are marked with black stripes, they tend to lose these as they grow older, retaining only the tail stripe. The ventral side of the Green Severum is tinged with rose, although the rest of the fish is green.

The Green Severum is native to South America, specific to the Amazon River Basin.

Specific Care Information: Relative Care Ease: Relatively Easy

An adult Green Severum should be kept in a tank of at least 200 liters. The Green Severum should be kept between 73 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit (23 and 25 degrees Celsius). Water should remain at a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. The water hardness levels should be between 5 and 8 dGH. Green Severums seem to like earthworms and many people have fed them with tablet or flake food. Insects and other fresh prey items have been offered with good results, since Green Severums are carnivorous.

Breeding and Propagation: Relative Breeding Ease: Uncertain

Male Green Severums usually have longer, more pointed anal and dorsal fins. Although most females have a black dot on their dorsal fins, some may lack this marking, and it is never present on males. To breed these fish, it is usually advisable to have a higher ratio of females to males. Male Green Severums may become aggressive during the breeding season, so they should be separated from other males. A flat rock should be provided for the Green Severum to lay its eggs on. Up to 1,000 eggs are deposited. Both Green Severum parents will care for the fry, though some may eat their eggs, particularly if they are kept in small aquariums.
