Animal Description:

The Antilles Pinktoe Tarantula, Avicularia versicolor, is a fairly small tarantula find in Martinique and Guadeloupe. They are an arboreal species. They are omnivorous, feeding many only insects both in the wild and in captivity.

The Antilles Pinktoe is a not normally aggressive, but may become aggressive if threatened.

Quite aesthetically pleasing, the Antilles Pinktoe is a pretty spider at all the stages of its life. As a spiderling, they are bright blue with black chevrons. As they mature, the blue begins to fade and is replaced with dark gray-blue along the cephalothorax. Adult Antilles Pinktoes have dark brownish-pink legs and abdomen. They are about two inches in diameter.

Specific Care Information: Relative Care Ease: Average

The Antilles Pinktoe Tarantula, because it is an arboreal species, should be kept in an enclosure at least two to three times the spider's full leg span in height. Shorter containers may cause stress. The best container for the Antilles Pinktoe is a 5.5 gallon vivarium with a plexiglass lid with ventilation holes drilled into it. Larger spiders may require larger vivaria.

The best flooring for your spider's environment is a mixture of soil and peat moss. This mix keeps water within it, making moderate humidity levels easier to maintain. However, they should not be kept in high humidity.

The Antilles' vivaria should include a few things to hide under and a large water dish. The vivarium should be kept between 74 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. They should be fed a couple of crickets several times a week. They can be given a pre-killed pinkie mouse or a small anole once a month to vary the diet.
