Animal Description: Breed Standard

The Foreign White originated in London England in the 1960's. The breeding program's goal was to produce an all white cat with blue eyes. To prevent deafness, commonly associated with blue eyes and a white coat, adding the Siamese into the breeding program provided an easy solution to this since their blue eyes come from a different gene. The Irish also began a line of Foreign White using a different type of Siamese. The English were using the seal point Siamese, while the Irish chose the red point. All successful breeding programs have worked hard to ensure the prevention of deafness in their lines.

The Foreign White resembles the Siamese in personality, though it is a bit mellower than the Siamese. The Foreign White is a talkative breed, like its forefather, but its voice is slightly softer. This cat will develop deep attachments to people, usually choosing one person to bestow all of its love and affection. It will become quite devoted to its special person, and it demands that is owners show it the same love and affection. This breed can be very independent, like all cats, so in spite of its affectionate nature it will choose to bestow its affections when it wants to, and only then.

The Foreign White possesses a stunning appearing with strikingly deep blue eyes. Its eyes are descended from the blue eyes of the Siamese and even though its coat is white, because of the genetic origins of its blue eyes, this breed is not subject to the deafness often associated with white animals with blue eyes. It is similar in size to the Siamese, and has a short white coat. It lacks the points associated with the Siamese, since its coat is a solid color. Some have described the Foreign White as a 'White Siamese'. This is a very good way of describing him to those unfamiliar with the breed. Unlike other Oriental breeds, the Foreign White breeding program does not permit breeding with other Orientals, with the exception of the Siamese. These strict breeding guidelines have contributed to preventing the deafness problems seen in other blue-eyed breeds. This cat is not to be confused with the Oriental White. The Oriental White allows varying eye colors including green, and multi colored. The only acceptable eye color for the Foreign White is blue.
