Tracing back to ancient times, the Blue Persian is said to be one of the oldest breeds of pedigree cats. We can see evidence of their popularity in the Renaissance, as they have been depicted in several Italian paintings from this time. Originating from what was then known as Persia, the Blue Persian was introduced to the west in the early 1800's. It is said that Queen Victoria owned a pair of Blue Persians. The popularity of the Blue Persian has been enjoyed for centuries. Persians have always been one of the most popular breeds of cats, and still hold a high place in the hearts of cat fanciers today. In our research, the Blue Persian was usually not defined as a distinct breed, but rather included under the general Persian category. Since the Blue Persian has a rich history all its own, and since it is described as a distinct breed by at least one source we will treat it as such, however, some personality and behavioral traits will be taken from the general Persian research. A placid, gentle breed, the Blue Persian has been a favorite of fanciers for many years. Regarded by some as dull and disinterested, those who know the Blue Persian know they are anything but. Their laid back personalities may give this impression to those not knowing better, but if you take only a little time to get to know this creature you will quickly realize he is merely just relaxed and content. The Persian is a quiet breed, much less vocal than other breeds from the same region. Due to their quiet natures, the Blue Persian is best suited for an equally quiet house, but because they are so laid back and mellow they can adapt to most any circumstance. The Blue Persian is famous for his long silky coat. This profuse coat is seen in varying shades of blue ranging from a pale to medium silvery blue. Dark or gray tones are not preferred, and are generally not accepted. The Blue Persian has a thick undercoat, which requires that you brush him often- at least several times a week. Some will require light daily brushing as well. Luckily, the Blue Persian generally enjoys being brushed. If you do not think you can meet these grooming requirements you may wish to consider a different breed of cat. While the brushing and combing necessities are not huge, they are required, and must be performed regularly to prevent tangling and matting. The round eyes of the Blue Persian are most expressive, typically seen in hues of orange or copper. The Blue Persian has a short, square body with a full lush tail. The Blue Persian is a fairly large breed, built with solid bones, and carried by short thick legs. The best way to describe this cat's face and head is round. They have small rounded ears atop a round head. The face is relatively flat. |
