The American Colorpoint Shorthair was first accepted as a breed in 1964. Although revered for its graceful stature, beneath the exotic lines of the American Colorpoint Shorthair lies the endearing quality of a truly sensitive feline. Known for their coats of many colors, they are also called: Colourpoint, Colorpoint, and American Colorpoint. These extraordinarily intelligent felines boast an air of self-confidence that might even be characterized as arrogance. Both curious and inquisitive they may be the most outgoing members of a household. They are known to be very talkative and demanding and require a great degree of attention from their owners and in fact, the entire household. Getting back to a discussion of their sensitive side, the American Colorpoint Shorthair is open and loving. Although they thrive on the sense of being an important member of the household, with equal intensity they connect and bond closely to adults, children, and other pets. A strong need to be loved, and in return, their ability to display sincere affection is one of the most attractive characteristics of this striking breed. Having both a fun and playful personality, American Colorpoint Shorthairs are known to be very unpredictable and extremely entertaining. A household that is willing to be an attentive audience, as well as a loving domain is the ideal environment for this audacious feline. Although the American Colorpoint Shorthair shares key features with the Siamese including a sleek, angular body they are set apart by being adorned in a wide spectrum of colored coats. This elegant breed struts about in distinctive colorpoints beyond blue, seal, chocolate, and lilac, to include an even fuller range from red, cream, parti-color, to lynx. In addition, some of the Colorpoint Shorthair - Americans' coats are solid, some patterned, and others are accented by striping along the tail, legs, masks, and ears. Regardless of the coat's color, it lies close to the Colorpoint Shorthair - Americans' exquisite build. Like the Siamese, they boast a regal air in a body that is both slender and svelte. Very large and attentive ears are set on a medium-sized head, which is accentuated with a pair of dazzling blue eyes. The American Colorpoint Shorthair breed was originally developed by crossing the Siamese, with red domestic shorthairs, and the Abyssinian. Initial pairings in the first quarter of this century, produced felines with red and cream limited to the points. Based on the ongoing diligence of breeders, the striking red, cream, and parti-color points, solids and patterned coats were established. The perseverance of American breeders resulted in furthering the broad color palette of the new American Colorpoint Shorthair to include lynx points. To set these felines apart from their Siamese relatives, they were then named the American Colorpoint Shorthair. |
