Animal Description: Breed Standard

The Colourpoint European Shorthair is a regal, elegant looking cat that possesses all of the beauty of the Siamese coat patterns, while retaining the many charming personality traits of the stocky and quiet Shorthair cats.

Officially created and recognized in 1982, the Colourpoint European Shorthair is a stunning beauty. A remarkable breed, it exhibits all of the allure of the Siamese with its beautiful pointed coat pattern, yet it retains all of the character and anatomy of the Shorthair.

The development of the Colourpoint European Shorthair's pointed coat, like the Siamese, is temperature dependent. At birth they are entirely white, it is only after a few weeks that you will know if your kitten is indeed a colorpoint. The amount of darkening is entirely dependant on body temperature. A good example of this is if your kittens suffers from an injury on one of his extremities (the extremities are where the pointing occur), the pointing will not develop its proper color because areas of injury are generally significantly warmer than other areas on the body of the kitten. The degree of darkness will vary among kittens, but none should ever remain entirely white unless one of the sires is a white cat. The Siamese cat has been used in out crossings to help create this charming breed. Development of this breed began in Italy.
