Animal Description: Breed Standard

Even though the Nevskiy Maskarade Cat looks a lot like a cross between the Siberian and the Siamese, it is a naturally occurring breed, and is not the result of crossbreeding. Crossbreeding is not allowed into any of the breeding programs. The origin of this color in the Siberian breed is thought to have occurred long ago, and a longhaired colorpoint cat in Russia is supposedly documented in an old illustration. In the 1980s a concentrated breeding effort was started in Russia to expand this breed. The main center was located in St. Petersburg, Russia near the Nevy River. This is where the "Nevskiy" part of the name originates. The Nevskiy Maskarade Cat is a newcomer to the United States, only being imported since 1997.

The appearance of the Nevskiy Maskarade Cat can be described as a combination of the exotic good looks of the Siamese with the gentle beauty of the Siberian Forest Cat. They are quite striking. The Nevskiy Maskarade Cat, also known as the "Neva Masquerade," "Colorpoint Siberian Forest Cat," and Colorpoint Siberian," is relatively new to many cat associations. This cat is rather talkative and forms deep bonds with its human family. In many ways this beautiful cat is much like the Siberian Forest Cat and is often classified as a color variety of the Siberian. They are, however, a lot more than that, as is evidenced by their chattiness. Like the Siberian, these cats are relatively docile, gentle, and relaxed. Do not be mislead; these cats are not couch potatoes and they can be very active as well. Known for their intelligence, these cats are sometimes described as "shrewd". Their behavior has been described by some as dog-like. Some will even come when they hear their names! The Nevskiy Maskarade Cat may also exhibit shyness under some circumstances. These are long-lived cats with an average lifespan of 15 to 20 years.

The stunning Nevskiy Maskarade Cat gets parts of its name, "Maskarade", from its beautiful coloring which looks like a mask. It has striking color pointing, along with the stunning long hair and neck ruff of the Siberian. These cats have thick undercoats that require regular grooming. These are strong, sturdy cats that have round heads, robust bodies, and powerful legs. Their eyes are described as quite expressive.
