Animal Description: Breed Standard

Like the Palomino the Buckskin is a class of horse that is defined by its coloring. Buckskins may be seen in a variety of breeds including the Quarter Horse, Arabian, Shetland and many other breeds of ponies and horses.

The Buckskin Horse, also known simply as the Buckskin, is a prized horse among horse lovers. Because Buckskins are seen in a variety of breeds, it is difficult to talk about the behavior common to this class since it will vary depending on the breed. Buckskins are seen in a variety of places, from pleasure and work horses, to the show-ring. Because Buckskins are seen in so many different breeds, one can easily see why they are such versatile horses.

The Buckskin Horse has a beautifully colored body, which makes them highly desired. The definition of Buckskin is a deer colored horse, brown with black points. There is the Dun, which has a dorsal stripe. A Red Dun is like the Dun, but is very reddish. The Grulla has more of a blue-gray tone to its color, with a dorsal stripe and dark points.

It is theorized that the Buckskin coloration originally developed in response to the environment. This coloration would make them more difficult for potential predators to see. The Spanish Mustang carries the Buckskin genes in America. Also, the Norwegian Fjord has been used to make new breeds, which wound up in America.

In 1963, the Buckskin was officially recognized with the American Buckskin Registry Association (ABRA). The ABRA set out with the task of collecting, recording and preserving pedigrees of Buckskin. The International Buckskin Horse Association was founded in 1971, with the same purpose as the ABRA. To date, the two organizations have logged almost 17,000 Buckskin horses.
