The Standard Rex Rabbit has often been referred to as the 'velveteen rabbit'. Its plush and beautiful coat makes this wonderful rabbit quite special and unusual. The Standard Rex makes a wonderful pet because of his sweet disposition. In addition to a beautiful personality, the Standard Rex has a strikingly soft and plush coat. Their coats are short and very thick. The best adjective to describe this incredible coat is 'velvety'. The guard hairs of the rex coat are almost as short as their undercoats, giving them their plushness. The guard hairs should never be apparent. It should be noted that Rex rabbits in general come in two sizes, standard and mini, and these sizes may have multiple color variations. Their coats are accepted in 15 different colors; black, blue, broken (also tri-color), Californian, castor, chinchilla, chocolate, lilac, lynx, opal, black otter, red, sable, seal and white. Each variation allows for different eye colors and the eyes should correspond with the appropriate color variation. The Standard Rex is sometimes seen in chocolate otter, blue otter, lilac otter and amber but these colors are not yet approved for show. Apparently amber may be accepted within the next few years, but this is not confirmed. The Standard Rex is a medium sized rabbit with the females weighing approximately nine pounds, while the males are slightly smaller at eight pounds. Together, the Standard Rex will be seen ranging anywhere from six to nine pounds. The Standard Rex originates from the first Rex mutation discovered in a rabbit in 1919. One male with the rex mutation was born in one litter and a female in another separate litter. These two were crossed and over time, today Rex Rabbits were produced. It was not until 1924 that Rex Rabbits were first seen in the show ring and their appearance enhanced their popularity. Some criticized the new rabbit. But most were captivated by the Rex s unique and unusual fur. |
