Animal Description:

The Yellow Banded Poison Frog is a beautiful small little frog. They are very brightly colored and make wonderful little pets. Also, their ease of care makes the Yellow Banded Poison Frog a good frog for beginning poison arrow frog keepers.

The Yellow Banded Poison Frog is most active during the beginning and the end of the day. The male will normally make noises, which are calls for females. The Yellow Banded Poison Frog can be handled, but they have sensitive skin and should not be handled excessively. These frogs are not shy at all and are very active throughout the day, hunting out in the open near the front of the enclosure. As is true with most poison dart frogs, their toxicity levels decrease in captivity, because the toxins they produce are derived from the insects they eat in the wild. However, it is still important to wash your hands after handling poison dart frogs and they should be kept away from other pets.

The Yellow Banded Poison Frog is a small frog, reaching a size of 31 to 39 millimeters in length at maturity. As their name implies, they have alternating stripes of bright yellow and black. Some will exhibit spots, and some will have stripes of orange rather than yellow. Females are usually larger and thicker than males are.

The Yellow Banded Poison Frog is native to several Central American countries, including Venezuela, Canaima and Bolivar.

Specific Care Information: Relative Care Ease: Average

Yellow Banded Poison Frogs are one of the easiest of the Poison Dart frogs to care for. The habitat should exhibit a tropical rainforest type atmosphere. Dense plants, particularly Vivaria and plenty of branches should be included. The floor should be gravel with soil and sphagnum moss covering most of it.They should be fed a variety of insects such as flightless fruit flies, small crickets, termites, and ants. Their habitat should be kept at roughly 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature should drop to between 70 and 75 degrees at night. Humidity levels should be maintained at about 80%. However, make sure to allow plenty of ventilation.

Breeding and Propagation: Relative Breeding Ease: Relatively Difficult

The Yellow Banded Poison Frog is difficult to breed. Provide the frogs with a secure area such as an upside down deli cup, coconut half, or small flower pot with a small hole in the side that is just large enough for them to enter an exit easily. Place a shallow bowl such as a petrie dish inside. In the shallow dish should be about half an inch of water, and place a plastic leaf on the dish so that just the tip is in the water. The eggs will hatch into tadpoles between 10 and 14 days.
