Animal Description:

The Malagasy Mantella, also known as the Painted Mantella is a favorite frog of many hobbyists. Their bright and beautiful colors make them quite a pleasure to watch.

The Malagasy Mantella has variable behavior. Some are reclusive and shy, while others are bold and outgoing. However, they are usually energetic. While it is acceptable to handle these creatures, it should be done only when necessary. They do excrete toxic alkaloid substances, much like the Poison Dart Frog.

The Malagasy Mantella is a bright and beautiful frog. They are mostly black with bright yellow, green, and orange colors. A light rostral line above the eyes is a distinguishing mark of the Painted Mantella. In addition, they display stripes behind their limbs, which resemble those of a tiger. At maturity, the Painted Mantella will only reach a size of 1 to 1.5 inches.

The Malagasy Mantella is native to the tropical forests of eastern Madagascar.

Malagasy Mantellas should be kept at a temperature around 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and about 70 degrees at night. It should also be noted that some have reported that this species is not tolerant of high temperatures. Malagasy Mantellas should be fed a varying diet of small insects such as pin head crickets, fruit flies, and ants.

Breeding and Propagation: Relative Breeding Ease: Uncertain

The Malagasy Mantella will lay its eggs under rocks or dead wood. A typical clutch will have 26 small white eggs. The eggs must be put into water, where tadpoles will emerge.
