Animal Description:

The Iridescent Day Gecko has been compared to the Neon Tetra fish of the lizard world, due to its striking coloration! It is no wonder that this brightly colored lizard is sometimes called the Neon Day Gecko.

Iridescent Day Geckos can make more amusing pets than many species of gecko, since these lovely little lizards are usually active in the daylight hours. They should have plenty of hiding places to reduce stress levels. They are quite non-aggressive. In fact, even males can be kept in groups. Because Iridescent Day Geckos have rather fragile skins, it is best not to handle them unless absolutely necessary. They tend to have high energy levels though, and it is often very entertaining simply to watch these little lizards move about their enclosures.

By the time they are mature, Iridescent Day Geckos are usually three and a half inches (nine centimeters) in length. Their heads are predominantly bright yellow and the base color of their bodies is a brilliant blue-green. Black, blue, green, or brown stripes run down the length of the Iridescent Day Gecko's body. Iridescent Day Geckos have round eyes, unlike many other gecko species.

Usually, Iridescent Day Geckos are found in Madagascar. They inhabit bamboo forests and due to their lovely coloration, have become quite popular in the pet trade. Although a very small number of these lizards were originally imported to Europe, they appear to be good breeders, and the population has increased in a short amount of time.

Specific Care Information: Relative Care Ease: Average

Usually, two adult Iridescent Day Geckos can be nicely housed in a 20 gallon enclosure. The daytime temperatures in the enclosure should be about 80 degrees Fahrenheit with a warmer area in the upper 80s. The nighttime temperatures should be between 70 and 75 degree Fahrenheit. Humidity should remain around 75 percent, so you should try to use a substrate that will aid in maintaining these levels. Often houseplants can make appropriate décor, as can hollow logs or sticks. The Iridescent Day Geckos should have vertical as well as horizontal climbing opportunities and lots of hiding places. Iridescent Day Geckos are not very territorial and can be housed in groups, though introducing a new individual to an established group should be done with caution. Iridescent Day Geckos should be fed a diet based on insects and sweet fruits. Nectar is also often incorporated into the diet. Usually, appropriately sized insects include crickets and fruit flies. Bananas, mangoes, papayas, and strawberries seem to be favorite fruits of Iridescent Day Geckos.

Breeding and Propagation: Relative Breeding Ease: Average

By six to nine months, Iridescent Day Geckos have usually reached sexual maturity. If you wish to breed them, you should ensure that they are receiving proper nutrition and you may wish to add a calcium supplement to any nectar offered to the female. Iridescent Day Geckos show pregnancy very well. Their normally slender bodies become quite swollen with a pair of six millimeter eggs. A hollow bamboo stick should be provided for the Iridescent Day Geckos to deposit her eggs in. Often they are incubated on top of moist vermiculite. After about 45 days of incubation, four to five centimeter long hatchlings emerge. Usually, they grow very quickly.
