Animal Description:

The colorful and active Peacock Day Gecko is a good pet for those wanting to keep day geckos.

The Peacock Day Gecko is arboreal and diurnal, native to the tropical forests of Madagascar. In the wild it eats insects, nectar, and fruits and spends its mornings basking in the sun. In captivity, these reptiles do well when kept singly, in groups of females with one male, or in male-female pairs. Males are territorial and will fight each other. Peacock Day Geckos are extremely active and should have branches to climb on and plants, since they live in the trees in the wild. Captive bred Peacock Day Geckos make much better, healthier pets than wild-caught Geckos, and refusing to buy wild-caught Peacock Day Geckos helps preserve wild populations.

Peacock Day Geckos generally grow to be about four and a half inches in length. They are brightly colored but have extremely sensitive skin which may become damaged with excessive handling. True to their names, Peacock Day Geckos are some of the most beautiful Day Geckos, exhibiting striking blue, red, and green coloration. Peacock Day Geckos often change color in the rainy season, fading to lighter green colors. They look very similar to Lined Day Geckos but lack the stripes on their undersides. Peacock Day Geckos may also be distinguished by a dark spot behind their front legs.

Peacock Day Geckos are native to the humid tropical forests of Madagascar, where they live in the trees and feed on insects.

Specific Care Information: Relative Care Ease: Average

Peacock Day Geckos are extremely active and should have branches to climb on and other vertical plants, since they live in the trees in the wild.

Feed your Peacock Day Geckos insects like waxworms, superworms, or crickets that have been dusted with calcium and mineral supplements about three to four times a week, in addition to fruit-flavored baby food. Remember to remove the baby food after about two hours, so it doesn't spoil. Peacock Day Geckos need lots of humidity - about 80 percent, in addition to a bowl of fresh water to drink or soak in. Make sure they have a basking spot of about 90 degrees Fahrenheit, but be careful that the ambient cage temperature remains about 80 degrees with a nighttime temperature about ten degrees cooler than the day. A UV light is necessary for about twelve hours a day, but the time should vary depending on the season. Misting the cage daily will also help keep your Day Geckos comfortable. Your Peacock Day Geckos, because they are so fragile, should not be handled too much. Make sure that they have a hiding spot in their enclosure in case they become too stressed and need to escape. Peacock Day Geckos are also very fast and very good climbers, so make sure the cage is secure.

Breeding and Propagation: Relative Breeding Ease: Average

Peacock Day Geckos will be encouraged to breed when one male is allowed several females. Males will display by shaking or wagging their heads and tails at the females. Females should be provided with a two to three inch deep container filled with damp peat moss in which to lay their eggs. Baby Peacock Day Geckos should be fed daily.
