The Fantastic Gecko is sometimes known as the Eyelash Leaf Tail Gecko, the Fantastic Leaf Tail Gecko, or the Satanic Leaf Tail Gecko. They are unique, interesting animals that are gradually becoming more popular in the pet market. Native to Madagascar, the Fantastic Gecko can often be found in forests and rainforests. Their preferred habitat is amongst leaf litter on the ground and in low shrubs. In the wild, the Fantastic Gecko is primarily insectivorous, meaning it feeds mostly on insects. Fantastic Geckos generally live in regions that receive very little daylight and sun. They do not do well in temperatures above around 80 degrees for extended periods, however, they do like fairly high relative humidity of between 75 and 85 percent. Fantastic Geckos rarely exceed five or six inches in length as mature adults. The name "Eyelash Leaf Tail Gecko" derives from the eyelash they have over each eye. The Fantastic Leaf Tail Gecko has a long, broad tail that comprises about half the lizard's total length. This tail closely resembles a leaf and often has bits missing, resemble a leaf gnawed by insects. Most Fantastic Geckos available for the pet trades were wild caught. These lizards are quite difficult to breed in captivity, however, wild caught females are often gravid and produce clutches of fertile eggs. |
