The Fan Footed Gecko is an amazing little lizard to observe in the wild. These interesting reptiles have fanned feet that aid them in climbing, and, although rather few are sold as pets, they can make fascinating captives. Usually, Fan Footed Geckos are found in arid habitats, usually rocky scrublands. In more desert areas, Fan Footed Geckos can be located in oases or near human habitations. Good climbers, these lizards are often found on walls or ceilings of such habitations. They may live in conjunction with other lizards, like Turkish Geckos. Hibernating between November and early February, Fan Footed Geckos usually emerge from their shelters after the third week in February. In the wild they eat insects and consume many moths. Fan Footed Geckos are nocturnal. By the time they are mature, Fan Footed Geckos usually measure between 5 and 7 inches. Their fingers are splayed out and have sticky fanlike pads that aid them in climbing. They also have a retractable claw on each foot. The eyes are large and the heads are relatively massive. Usually, Fan Footed Geckos are light brown in color. They have darker brown markings. Native to North Africa, Fan Footed Geckos are also found in more eastern regions like Iraq or Iran. Usually they are found in elevations below 6,000 feet (2,000 meters). |
